Registration

To take the CHSPE, you must first register for the exam. We strongly recommend that you use the online system to create a registration form for mailing or register electronically. However, if you would prefer to register by pen and paper, you may choose to download a copy of the Information Bulletin or have a copy of the Information Bulletin mailed to you.

Note: If you need accommodations for a documented disability or need to request Sunday testing for religious reasons, there are special rules and deadlines you will need to follow in addition to the standard instructions.

Registration has two potential methods:

  1. Standard Registration: This involves creating a registration form online, printing it out and mailing it to the CHSPE Office along with any necessary eligibility documents and proper payment in the form of a money order or cashier's check.
  2. Electronic Registration: This is only available to returning registrants and registrants who are 16 years old or older. This method requires candidates to create a registration form online, upload any necessary eligibility documents, and paying for the exam online using a credit card.

This Web site will guide you through the steps necessary to either prepare your registration materials for mailing, or register electronically. More detailed directions are found below. When you are ready to begin registering, you may go directly to the registration form.

The table below shows the differences between the two registration methods.

Filling out the Registration Form

The registration form link on this page will walk you through creating a registration form and preparing all your materials for mailing.

Proving your Eligibility

You may take the CHSPE only if on the test date you:

  • are at least 16 years old, or
  • have been enrolled in the tenth grade for one academic year or longer, or
  • will complete one academic year of enrollment in the tenth grade at the end of the semester during which the next regular administration will be conducted. (Regular administrations are the fall and spring administration each school year.)

You must prove your eligibility as part of the registration process. If you are reregistering and have previously taken CHSPE since January 2003, your proof of eligibility is on file. It does not need to be resubmitted.

There are two methods you can use to prove your eligibility to take the CHSPE.

Method A involves sending mailing or uploading in a copy of an official document that verifies your date of birth. The CHSPE Office will review your documents and if the rest of your registration materials are acceptable, register you for the test.

Method B involves having your school verify your eligibility to test by completing a portion of your registration form and then placing a school seal on the form. You must use standard registration if you are using method B to prove your eligibility.

If you will be 16 years of age or older on the test date, you may use either Method A or Method B. If you will be under 16 years of age on the test date, you must use Method B.

To use method A: Submit one of the following documents that shows your name and birth date or grade level (if grade 11 or higher) with your registration form . This document will not be returned.

  • A copy of your driver license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles
  • A copy of your U.S. certified birth certificate issued by a city, county or state (Hospital certificates are not acceptable documents for proof of eligibility.)
  • A copy of your passport (the page with name and birth date only)
  • A copy of your identification card issued by:
    • The Department of Motor Vehicles
    • The U.S. military,
    • A high school,
    • A post-secondary school, or
    • The U.S. or a foreign government
  • A copy of your U.S. Permanent Resident Card
  • A copy of your Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certificate of Birth Abroad
  • A copy of your foreign birth certificate
  • A school transcript with school seal
  • An original school letter of identification as described on the Identification page

To use method B: The School Eligibility Verification Section on your registration form must be completed by one of the following at a California high school: the principal, director, vice principal, counselor, registrar, or site administrator identified on a Private School Affidavit (R-4) or statement in lieu of the Affidavit. The school official may not be a relative unless the school has a current R-4 or statement in lieu of the Affidavit. (State law does not permit school officials to require parental permission before verifying an applicant's eligibility to take the test.) The School Eligibility Verification Section must include a school's official seal. Make sure that the school's County-District-School (CDS) code is provided. If the school does not have a CDS code, you must include a copy of your school's R-4 or statement in lieu of the Affidavit. Students enrolled outside the state of California may not use Method B to demonstrate eligibility.

Students enrolled in school outside of California may not use method B and so may not register if they are under 16 years of age.

NOTE: Photo identification is required to gain entrance to the test center. In addition to what you submit for proof of your eligibility, an acceptable form of photo identification must be presented at the time of check-in, or you will not be admitted to the test. Some items accepted for proof of eligibility are not accepted for entrance to the exam. For more information on acceptable identification, review the Photo Identification page.

Sending your Materials to the CHSPE Office with Proper Payment

The date your materials are received in the CHSPE office determines your registration cost. The received date is defined as the date we have a complete set of registration materials that are ready for the registration process. Some examples why registration materials might be incomplete are: missing or improper documentation, requesting sites that have closed, or improper payment. If your materials are incomplete upon arrival, they will not be processed until the materials are completed or corrected. Any delay in completing your registration materials may result in additional fees and the sites you requested may close before you are registered. This is true of both standard registration and electronic registration.

DO NOT SEND A PERSONAL CHECK. IF YOU SEND A PERSONAL CHECK, IT WILL BE RETURNED AND YOU WILL NOT BE REGISTERED.

If you require special accommodations or Sunday testing, there are special deadlines for these requests. Be sure to read and follow all the directions for making special requests.

* Withdrawals received prior to the regular registration deadline will qualify for a partial refund. For more information see the Changes and Withdrawal page.

Regular Registration Deadline

(The regular registration deadline is also the deadline to request special accommodations. For more information see instructions for making accommodations requests.)

To be eligible for regular registration, your completed registration form, proof of eligibility, and payment of $110.00 must be received in the CHSPE Office by 5:00 p.m. on the regular registration deadline. Incomplete registration materials received on or before the regular registration deadline will be returned unprocessed with a letter informing you of the problem.
